Editorial: Spread the word about Head Start opening

The importance of programs like Head Start cannot be understated.

The hands on learning a child experiences in the program from the ages of three to five is beneficial to their transition from early education to grade school. I have witnessed just how important the program in various communities around the western United States. It not only makes a difference, but more importantly can help out families who really need quality pre school, but do not have the income to afford it.

Last week I was able to attend an informational meeting about the Head Start program in Whitehall, and it was troubling. Despite the local program being a boon to the community, it may have to shut down if they are unable to find a teacher/family advocate for next school year. While there are also concerns with not having enough income eligible students for next year, the pressing issue is finding a teacher to replace Elaine Henningsen. Officials with the program are hoping to have someone hired by June 2, and if not they may have to shut down the Whitehall program.

The position has been advertised a variety of ways, and I’m hoping this editorial is one more way to spread the word about this opening. It is imperative to the community that someone is hired and someone is hired soon.

I would like to think there is someone in the local area that not only has the qualifications, but also would be willing to apply for the position. Even if they could only commit till they found someone else for the position, it would be vital t to the future of the program.

Anyone who might be interested or knows somebody with experience in early childhood education should take a look at the job announcement online. The link is http://www.rmdc.net.

Spread the word about this position. The Head Start program is too important not to have it in Whitehall.
