Lady Trojans open season Dec. 1

Under the direction of first-year head coach Kelly Nieskens, there were plenty of positives for the 2017-18 Whitehall High School girls basketball coach. With their 2018-19 season starting Saturday at home against Manhattan Christian, Nieskens is looking forward to year two at the helm.

"The communication between the girls and I has improved greatly. We were able to start this year off at a faster pace," he said. "We have some ladies that want to win, a couple of new kids, and a whole different looking offense. I'm excited, Coach (Julie) Kieckbusch is extra excited!"

The Lady Trojans will return several key players from last year who had quality varsity minutes throughout the season.

"It was a great experience for those younger kids last year. They came out the season excited and ready to work. I expect those girls from last year to get pushed by the younger girls coming in. Competition makes you better, so I am looking for those girls to work hard and compete," Nieskens said.

Whitehall will also welcome two new freshman to the team, Brynna Wolfe and Haley Briggs.

Nieskens said Wolfe will get a lot of varsity time during the season.

"She will be our point guard who has great basketball intelligence, especially for her age. She has the ability to score, good ball handling skills and plays unselfishly," he said.

Because numbers are low for the team, the Lady Trojans were also able to pull up two eighth graders to the team. Nieskens said Maxine Hoagland and Jade Clarkson will both contribute quality minutes to the team.
