Trojans battling weather

With their season-opening meet scheduled for Friday in Frenchtown, the Whitehall High School track team has been battling the weather in anticipation of their first event.

"The beginning of the season has been a difficult one. It's tough doing everything inside or with only being able to use a portion of the track so we are hoping this weather can stay around and melt more of this snow," said head coach Dan Lacey.

A total of 23 student-athletes joined the team who started practice March 11 and according to Lacey his expectations for the first meet are to see where they are individually among other competitors and to continue to get their bodies and minds in shape to compete at the District Track Meet in early May.

Lacey said Cade Briggs will be a top returner in the long and triple jump.

"We are still a little beat up from injuries to the boys team, so some of our top competitor's won't be able to participate this season," he said.

Lacey is also expecting to see big things from Katie Whitehurst and Madison Loomis.

"They really push each other to get better and it's nice to have someone to compete against in practice," he said.

As far as newcomers, Lacey is excited to see what Charlynn Mercer and Flint Smith can bring to the table in 2019.

"They should both be fun to watch compete in multiple events," he said.
