Hoagland appointed to Whitehall Council

The Town of Whitehall has a new council member in Ward 3.

Shawn Hoagland was appointed Monday night to fill the position of council member Jason Good. Hoagland will start in the position July 8 and his term will run until the end of the year.

The council also voted to host a July 8 public hearing to discuss the possibility of annexing into the Jefferson Valley Rural Ambulance District. The public hearing will take place at 6 p.m. with the regularly scheduled council meeting scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

Upcoming chip sealing and fixing of potholes was also discussed at the meeting.

Former Council Member Montina Rawson said the potholes in town need to be filled before the planned chip sealing the second week in July. She also encouraged the governing body to have a meeting to discuss their expectations for the chip sealing.

Council member Roy McBride said he recently drove around and looked at potholes in town and some need to be fixed right away.

Council member Francie Giono said she noticed that a lot of the potholes they fixed in 2018 are already as bad or worse than last year and wonders if there is a better way to fix them.

In her monthly report, Mayor Mary Janacaro Hensleigh reported she was having brunch last Sunday when she looked outside and saw both children and adults doing alley cleanup. Janacaro Hensleigh said she didn't know who they are but seeing them working warmed her heart and she publicly thanked them for their efforts.

"If a lot of us will do a little, a lot will get done," she said.

Janacaro Hensleigh also reported the town pool opened for the season June 11. The pool hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The council also approved a Facebook page for the Town of Whitehall. Clerk/Treasurer Summer Fellows said she hopes it isn't just her updating the page and asked for help from the Mayor and Council.

Newly appointed council member Roy McBride was selected as the new president of the Whitehall Town Council.

Fellows and planning board committee chair Lori Young reminded local residents about the deadlines for submitting items to the board.

Fellows said they need to send out packets so people wanting to be on the agenda have to meet the deadlines. Young added she would appreciate those submitting information honor deadlines and to not harass the staff.
