Trojans face tough test with defending champs

It will be a tough test for the Whitehall High School boys basketball when they open their season Saturday on the road at Manhattan Christian.

According to Trojans head coach Zach McLean, the hosting Eagles will return three all-state players from last year's undefeated state championship team.

"We will have our hands full. They can create some problems with their guard play. It will be crucial for us to take care of the ball and really contain guys off the dribble. We also need to attack where we have some advantages," he said.

Whitehall will return three starters in Brendan Wagner, Hayden Hoagland, and Dylan Smith from last year's team. McLean is happy to have the trio back but knows they will have a different role during the 2019-20 campaign.

"But those three know what it's like to play in our league night in and night out. They will have increased roles in both are the offensive and defensive schemes," McLean said.

Along with the three starters, McLean added Flint Smith, Kenzie Hugulet, Mason Alexander and Lane Wagner have all gotten better over the summer.

"We had a good summer. I was pleased with our open gym attendance and we played some quality teams over the summer," he said.

The Trojans will also welcome a new assistant coach this season. Former Butte High School head coach Luke Powers is now on the staff.

"I'm really excited about Coach Powers joining our program. He has really brought a new clean perspective into the program and I'm very fortunate to have him," he said.
