Trojans win at Townsend

The Whitehall High School boys basketball team ended their regular season last week putting together arguably their best performance of the year in a 43-29 road win over Townsend.

The Trojans started strong taking a 20-11 lead into the half and never looking back in the double-digit victory.

"Those kids played so dang hard, and they practiced so hard. That's all about them – we just prepared them and the executed so well. I'm so proud of them. They earned that win," McLean said.

Junior Hayden Hoagland led the team with 12 points, and sophomore Brendan Wagner was also in double figures with 11. Dylan Smith added nine, Kenzie Hugulet had six, Flint Smith finished with three and Colton Prevost added two.

In action Saturday, Whitehall fell in their regular-season finale 73-45 at home to top-ranked and defending state champion Manhattan Christian.

McLean said the rematch between the two teams was different from earlier in the season, and the first game was over after about four minutes.

"I thought we competed and played hard. I think there were a couple of possessions that we got the ball inside, and those were some of the best possessions we have had all year," he said.

The Trojans (3-14, 2-8 Southern B) will open the postseason Thursday at the 5B District Tournament at the Belgrade Events Center. Sixth-seeded Whitehall will play rival Jefferson at 7:30 p.m. The Trojans lost two overtime games this season to the Panthers.

Looking towards the tournament, McLean said his team will be looking to utilize on some size and tools other teams in the league don't have.

"It's anybody's game now. We are going to put it all on the line this week and we will see what happens," he said.

The winner of the Thursday game will play Manhattan Friday at 4:30 p.m. The loser will play Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
