Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Our View: Leave the campaign signs alone

Over the past few weeks, I've heard numerous reports of campaign signs and flags being vandalized and unfortunately, this is something that seems to happen all the time.

In the paper a few weeks ago, there was a story about a local resident who helped to replace a sign that had been vandalized and while this was a feel-good story, she really shouldn't have ever been placed in that situation.

Now perhaps more than ever before, politics has divided the residents of the United States and the political bickering can become downright nasty. The stealing, vandalizing, or destruction of signs has gotten out of control and needs to stop.

It seems that people really have forgotten that one of the best parts of the country is that people can have a choice in who they support and vote for. Nobody should have to worry about being put down or having their property destroyed because their political values don't fall in line with those of someone else.

There are always going to be heated political discussions, especially during a Presidential Election year, but there is a fine line between supporting a candidate and breaking the law.

The same can be said with the way some treat other people in public and on social media. I personally have witnessed some very nasty things being said recently to people because of the hat they were wearing or the bumper sticker on their car. This is not necessary.

At the end of the day, it's pretty damn amazing to live in an amazing state in an amazing country where we have the right to vote for whoever we want to and nobody should have to feel bad about it.
