Connecting Point: Celebrating Authentic Women

Just last Sunday many of us celebrated Mother’s Day. It is one of those distinctions that contributes to our civilization. As a matter of fact, in America, Mother’s Day dates back about one hundred years and was signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson. Also, in the Western world, Mother’s Day contributed to holding society together dating back to the 12th century. You can include yours truly amongst those who believe it is essential for us to celebrate Mother’s Day.

To all mothers: You are unique, because through you we all have life. Being a son and seeing firsthand the birth process as a father I’m marveled by God’s intricate design for mothers specifically. Genesis 3:20 provides a foundation for us: “The man called his wife’s name ‘Eve,’ because she was the mother of all living.” Although our society has seen traditional roles change in part, we cannot escape the powerful influence that mothers will always have. I’m grateful to have a loving mother in my life. Likewise, I’m blessed that our children have a mother who loves in such a self-sacrificing manner.

To mothers who have lost their children through stillbirth or miscarriage: You are unique as well and special. Often Mother’s Day and specific anniversaries can be quite emotional for you. You’re a mother and no one can take that celebrated title from you. My prayer is that you can find peace through the power of Jesus. Mary the mother of Jesus was an extraordinary person; she too understood loss. Many of you can sympathize with this mother in degrees that others do not comprehend.

To all other women: Perhaps you are one who is content to journey through life as the unique person God has created you to be--motherhood isn’t among your life’s pursuits. Such a choice does not limit your giftedness. Self-sacrificial love characterized Mother Teresa. She is often quoted, and said, “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”

To younger women and girls: Your journey is just underway, the future hasn’t unfolded yet. You are amongst many young women today. Be assured you are appreciated and loved. One of the greatest avenues of demonstrating love comes through time. As a parent, grandparent, relative, or friend, we can pour our lives into future generations. Celebrate this cycle with us.

Psalm 139:13-14 is beautiful: “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.”

God fashioned you perfectly and distinctly different from males. One of the greatest confidences you can hold on to in life is finding peace in your soul that God didn’t make a mistake with you. Even before the point of your conception and birth, God saw you as wonderful. Discover your God given potential; pursue your life with purpose.
