Mai Wah Museum Opens For Season on June 15th

The Mai Wah Society is excited to announce its museum in historic Uptown Butte will open for the season on Monday, June 15, 2021. As part of the national Blue Star Museums program, the Mai Wah will offer free admission to our nation’s active-duty military personnel and their families. The Mai Wah is also extending this same offer to first responders and medical workers in appreciation of their tireless and heroic efforts during the pandemic.

The Mai Wah Society operates a museum in the historic Mai Wah/Wah Chong Tai building in Uptown Butte (17 West Mercury Street). It’s located in the center of what was Butte’s historic Chinatown, a six-block area once home to many Chinese residents. The Mai Wah is unique in Montana and the region, as there is no other museum that tells the story of the Chinese on the mining frontier. The current season for the museum is June 15, 2021, through Sept. 11, 2021. It will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

This year, the Mai Wah is proud to be part of the Blue Star Museums program, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in collaboration with Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 museums nationwide. It offers free admission to the nation’s active-duty military personnel, including the National Guard and Reserves, and their families. Additionally, the Mai Wah will offer free admission to first responders and medical personnel, as a thank you for their incredible work during the pandemic. Visitors meeting any of the previous criteria will just need to show their work badges or identification cards to get free admission.

Regular admission prices are $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for kids, students, and seniors. Children under five years old get in for free. When visiting, make sure to plan time for browsing in the Mai Wah gift shop. For more information, please consult the Mai Wah website (http://www.maiwah.org/) or follow us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/MaiWahMuseum). People may also call the museum at (406) 723-3231 once it opens for the season.
