Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: July 12, 1996

Three Whitehall players – Dallice Smith, Hannah Warfield and Amber O’Donnell – proved Monday that their selection to the league All Star team was well deserved. The three were selected from the Whitehall Red Socks team to play on the Longfellow Major Girls All Stars team. In post season play July 8, Amber O’Donnell helped set the pace as the Longfellow All Stars routed the Dillon All Stars, 24-7. O’Donnell got her team off to a great start with a first inning homer which brought Warfield in from second base. In the course of the game, Smith singled twice and Warfield added another single and a double.

The First Christian Church Youth group will present a western melodrama/dinner theater July 14 to raise money for turning the church basement into a center for youth activities. “Big Daddy from Doubtful Gulch,” the melodrama, is a story of Big Daddy upon whom hard times have fallen. He and his daughter, the heroine Dreamy Desire, look for help from the dashing neighbor, Daring Do. Of course, no melodrama is complete without a villain. Mr. D. Story does his best to overcome the other three with apathy and pessimism.

Barbara Thronson, Livingston, was sent to the principal’s office July 2. Thronson is not a misbehaving student, though. She is the person tapped to oversee WHS in the coming year.

Former principal Jim McCrossin retired at the end of his contract this spring, saying he wanted to take life a little easier. He will still be teaching at the junior high level, but McCrossin said he felt it was time for someone else to step into the principal role.

Varying leadership from time to time is healthy for a school, he said.

On July 2 the Whitehall school board voted unanimously to hire Thronson to take over. With 19 years of experience in education – including time as an assistant superintendent, elementary and middle school principal – Thronson should be an asset to Whitehall, the board said.
