Montana State Park of the Week: Spring Meadow Lake

Before Spring Meadow Lake became the beautiful state park it is today, it was home to an old gravel pit and factory.

Spring Meadow Lake State Park is located on the western edge of Helena. It is an urban day-use park and is a popular spot for family afternoons of swimming, sunbathing, fishing, birdwatching, and having fun.

The park features new picnic shelters and a pavilion for group use. You can book the pavilion for the day online, or if you would like to reserve the pavilion for less than a full day, please call the park manager directly at 406-495-3270.

In addition to the water and beach area, the park offers an 0.8 mile, self-guided nature trail that circles the lake.

There is no lifeguard on duty at Spring Meadow State Park. Visitors swim at their own risk. Complimentary life jackets, ranging in size from infant to adult, are available to use while visiting Spring Meadow Lake from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Play it safe when recreating near water.

NO dogs allowed in the park between April 15 - October 15.

The park is home to a variety of birds, turtles, and other wildlife. Trout, bass and sunfish have been introduced into its waters. There is a fishing dock that is ADA accessible on the south end of the lake.

In winter, you can stroll along the trail and if it's cold enough, ice fish and ice skate on the lake. Special events are held periodically during the year.

The Montana Wild Education Center is next to the park. Stop in to see amazing wildlife displays and learn about the animals that call Montana home.

While not open to the general public, Montana Wild also serves an important role as a wildlife rehabilitation center.

When a wild animal like a bear or eagle is injured in Montana, it often ends up at Montana Wild to be treated and nursed back to health before being released back into the environment.
