Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Name to a Face: Arcylle Shaw

Arcylle Shaw. If you haven't met her in person, it's highly likely the person next to you has. Her name is a staple in Whitehall and Cardwell. She has the information you are looking for, and if she doesn't she will get it! For decades Arcylle was the face of the Cardwell News section "For Your Information" in the Whitehall Ledger - everyone knew to send their updates to her.

Born and raised in Whitehall, Arcylle was involved in the percussion section of the high school band, and loved sports, though not much was then available for girls to play.

As a junior, she began dating her future husband, Douglas Leslie Shaw. After graduation she found employment in Helena, doing accounting for an insurance company before transitioning to accounting for the Montana state unemployment office, which she stayed at for nearly three years.

Upon marrying, Arcylle found herself entrenched in the farm and ranch ways of living, as her husband brought her to the family ranch in Cardwell. This was a new experience; calving and lambing seasons, with late night birthings were a new challenge for her. However, all the ranching chaos found new peace when in December of their first year of marriage, Arcylle and Doug had their first child. Five children (Shane, Kelly, Blake, Julie, and Paul) were raised on the Cardwell ranch. Doug passed in 2007; Arcylle has now been in Cardwell for sixty-two years.

Arcylle played a key role in the Jefferson Valley Museum's creation. She and Doug, along with a nucleus of other locals, spent thousands of hours planning the curation of the museum, eventually developing a museum board and finding the museum's home in Teene and Basil Brooke's 1914 barn, which the museum board renovated. In 1996 the museum opened its doors. Decades later, Arcylle still volunteers countless hours cleaning and recording artifacts, tagging and cataloguing items and keeping the museum moving along.

Arcylle is not only passionate about Whitehall/Cardwell's history, but also about teaching children the love of Jesus Christ. She and Doug were founding members of the Cardwell Community Church. With today's distractions and temptations we deal with daily, Arcylle believes it is important to teach children the goodness in Christ; how the beauty of the world is all around us and should be appreciated. Arcylle's goal in life is to live each day with no regrets and love every moment of it.

Arcylle loves being a part of this community, and the community loves her for her advice, input, and dedication to school and community events. Now, if we could just get her to start writing her column again...
