Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: 12/19/1996

DECEMBER 19, 1996

New ownership has come to the Whitehall Ledger. Glenn Marx, an advisor to Governor Marc Racicot, and his wife Terri, officially purchased the weekly newspaper Friday, December 13, and will formally take over operations on January 1, 1997. Marx said they are looking forward to the challenges and to becoming a part of Whitehall. The couple, along with their two children (daughter Anna, 11, and son Toby, 9) are purchasing a home in Whitehall.

Marx said it has been a dream of his to own a community newspaper for years. For the past five years, Marx has been policy director for Governor Marc Racicot, analyzing policies and issues facing the governor and providing options for responding. Marx was also campaign manager during Racicot’s successful 1992 gubernatorial campaign. Terri Marx was the treasurer in the recent campaign which gave Racicot another four years in office. It was newspaper work that originally brought Marx to Montana from his native Minnesota. While still in college studying mass media with an emphasis on community journalism in the late 1970s, Marx wrote to a number of Montana newspapers asking for an internship. He landed a spot at the Cut Bank Pioneer Press and headed west. Marx said he saw Montana and “as with most people, it was love at first sight.”

Whitehall third graders play rhythm instruments to accompany a tune called “Chrissimas Day” as part of the Whitehall Elementary School Christmas concert held December 11. Each class from kindergarten through fifth presented two or three songs in the program. The fifth grade band also played.
