Everyone is welcome to come and try the goodies so stop by and vote.

Next week the Holocaust Project will be holding a special program in remembrance of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp on January 27, 1945. It is recognized as International Holocaust Remembrance Day that commemorates the victims of the Holocaust. The day was designated by UN General Assembly resolution 60/7 after a special meeting was called after the recognition of the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz by Soviet troops. Our guest speaker will be sharing the history of their family, including the escape of their uncle from Auschwitz during the war. This program begins at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 20, and is open to the public. The content of this program may not be suitable for very young children.

There are several different remembrance days around the world. Holocaust Remembrance Day is on the 27th day of Nisan (Hebrew calendar) and marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. It is called Yom Hashoah in Hebrew and is the day observed in Israel. In the United States, Days of Remembrance begin the Sunday before Yom Hashoah through the next Sunday. This year it starts on Thursday, April 28. If you are interested in events held during the Days of Remembrance, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has an excellent website with more information.

Deanna Mydland came to Storytime last week to share her knowledge of light and shadows with the preschoolers. They had a wonderful time exploring how light works, making shadows and doing other great light-related experiments. Storytime meets every Friday at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. Deanna visits once a month as does our musical storytime presenter, Karen Burtch. Parents and their children are welcome to attend at any time.

Don’t forget to pick up your reading sheet for the Winter Reading Scavenger Hunt. I am working my way through all of the genres I never read first in order to spread my horizons with new authors and subjects. The contest runs until March 31 so there is plenty of time to start if you haven’t already.
