According to a statistical report recently published by Montana State University, Whitehall and the surrounding area are not only growing in population, but the growth is among the highest in Montana. The report shows the population in Jefferson County grew 13.2 percent from 1990 through 1994, which ranks the county in fourth place in Montana. Whitehall and the southern portion of Jefferson County grew by 11 percent over the same five-year period.

Preparations were being made to move the Corner Store into the former building occupied by Showcase Carvings. Tim Mulligan purchased the property and will expand the Corner Store from 1,000 sq. ft. up to 5,000 sq. ft. Mulligan plans to make the move in April.

An appeal to the Montana Supreme Court was filed by legal counsel representing opponents to aspects of the Whitehall water improvement project. The appeal focused on two issues: whether a public vote should be called before the meters are installed and new water rates implemented; and whether the petition to vote on the meters and rates interferes with the Town of Whitehall's contractual obligations to complete the entire project.

Trojan Educator of the Week was Debbie Sorensen, home economics teacher. Debbie was selected Educator of the Week for her “excellence in teaching” and for introducing a gourmet cooking class to the high school. The gourmet class is very popular, says principal Barb Thronson, who adds that Sorensen “really cares about her students.” Sorensen and her husband Russ are the parents of Ben and Andy Sorensen. Debbie is a 4-H Leader and enjoys reading, music, and art.

Trojan Student of the Week was Eric Strauss. Eric was nominated for Trojan Student of the Week by teacher Julie Kieckbusch for his work in creating a unique homepage for the Whitehall advanced communications class. The son of Irene and Rick Strauss, Eric plans to attend college and play collegiate football. Eric likes music, football, and sports.

Trojan Athlete of the Week was Justin Newman. Justin finished in first place at the Darby Invitational Wrestling Tournament last week and is this week’s Trojan Athlete of the Week. The son of Rochelle Waterman and Perry Jones, Justin will soon be preparing for the Divisional Wrestling Tournament. Justin plans to attend college and obtain a degree in electrical engineering. Justin likes to rodeo, hunt, and compete in sports.
