Dear Editor: Questions About Whitehall

Dear Editor,

I am new to town and was curious as to why there are so many ambulances parked in driveways or in front of houses?

I would also like to know why there is a Town Hall building with two large fire/ambulance bays in it but no fire trucks or ambulances. This building seems like such a waste for a small town. I was wondering what they use it for and why the ambulances are not making use of this wonderful building?

Also regarding our police department. Are they paid by the county or the city? Where is their office located here in Whitehall?

Also, at the East end of First St., there is a building that says Country Store. Is this vacant? Someone said it was a thrift store, but I’ve yet to see it open.

If there is no one occupying this place is it for rent or sale? A thrift store would be a great addition to this wonderful town.

Just trying to get the lay of the land and answers to a few puzzling questions.

A Concerned New Resident of Whitehall

Editor’s Response:

Dear Concerned,

Thank you so much for the questions! It makes Whitehall natives realize what our great little town may look like to newcomers. Let me answer a few of your questions in brief and I urge you to contact me at the Ledger (287-5301), the Town Clerk at the Town Hall office (287-3972), the Chamber of Commerce (287-2260), and others to get further information. Check out the Community Directory on the back page of the Ledger as well. Please get involved with the community - the more volunteers the better!

Ambulances: The ambulances are manned by volunteers, which is why they are parked in front of their residences. The Ambulance District was offered to rent this building but they declined the offer. Town Hall moved down in the summer of 2018, there are three bays: one is used by the fire department, one for Public Works, and the third is used by the town hall for files and record storage. The old town hall is now City Court.

Police: our town has a contract with the Jefferson County Police Department. Because a mill levy was not passed in the last election, the police budget is slim as costs went up. The Town Hall is the best place to get more direct information on this.

Country Store: The Country Store is owned by the Town but run by the ladies of the Country Store. They are open Fridays and Saturdays from 1-4 PM. They have not been open in recent weeks due to COVID-19 illnesses amongst the volunteers.

Thank you and I hope this helps!
