FD22: Historic Tours from Jefferson Valley Museum

A new historic tour will be offered by the Jefferson Valley Museum for the Frontier Days weekend.

The tour will be offered three times on Friday, July 22nd at 10:30 AM, 1:30 PM, and 3:30 PM, and one time on Saturday, July 23rd at 2 PM. Each tour will last approximately 1.5 hours.

Transportation for participants will be on a small bus. Highway construction may change the planned route; but, at this time, each tour will leave from the Jefferson Valley Museum at 303 South Division and head east on Highway 2 to the Salvagni Ranch where we will look at what may be the oldest standing residence in the valley, believed to have been built in the 1860s. From there the tour will travel down Tebay Lane to McKeown and over to Cardwell for a short stop and explanation of that area’s history.

The final stop will be the South Boulder Cemetery where the group will walk among the headstones and learn interesting, some quite sad, stories of 19th and early 20th families, many of whom have descendants still living in this area. If road construction interferes, the tour will go to Cardwell via I-90 and skip the stop at Salvagni’s.

The cost is still only $5.00 per person and it is hoped that people will donate a little above that to help cover the high fuel costs. All money goes to Whitehall Public Transportation for the use of their bus.

The driver and tour guide are volunteers and receive no compensation. Tour participants will need to be able to stand for short periods of time and walk the equivalent of about two blocks during the course of

the tour. Those who choose to stay on the bus at the scheduled stops will miss hearing that portion of the presentation. Tickets may be purchased at the Jefferson Valley Museum between the hours of noon and 4 PM. Each tour is limited to 10 people.
