Juggling Workshop Seeking Participants Ages 9-99 September 20 & 23 at Star

Would you like to learn how to walk on a tightwire? Or maybe someday swing on a trapeze? Or perhaps bounce a soccer ball on your head forever - or maybe on your foot? All while juggling at the same time? While riding a unicycle would you like to juggle three balls all in one hand? Or perhaps some juggle clubs, juggle rings, or even juggle fire? Would you like to learn how to concentrate on something like that AND figure it all out?

This workshop, plus a firm desire to practice, will get you started.

Whitehall non-profit Gold Junction Presents will be offering a free Juggling Workshop class with instructors Hanna Moors and Russell Davis on Tuesday, September 20 at 3:45 PM at the Star Theatre; the workshop will meet a second time at 2:45 PM on Friday, September 23, again at the Star. The workshop is open to anyone age nine and above; only 20 spots are available.

The workshop will begin with balancing a broom or wooden staff on either hand, and also perhaps on the foot, the forehead, or chin. A sense of balance is central to anything we do no matter how complex. Then participants will each take a ball or bean bag, and there will be exercises throwing a ball from one hand to the other and back, making sure not to favor either side. Juggling is not like opening a door or writing a letter, one must use both hands and they must pay attention to one another. Then a second ball will be added, and then a third. No matter how magic something looks, there is a logic underlying it, and this will be discussed.

Workshop instructors welcome those who already know how to juggle, or ride a unicycle, those who are young, those who are old, and everyone in between.

Instructor Hanna Moors walks the wire and juggles, she also does poi and flower sticks. She takes Trapeze at the New England Center for Circus Arts and has a dance background from her time in London, Brussels, and Italy.

Instructor Russell Davis was a circus skills instructor for the Big Apple Circus’ education program in Harlem, NY. He has led juggling workshops at various theatres and universities. He was one of four jugglers featured in “The Best Jugglers You’ve Never Heard Of”, a cover story on JUGGLE magazine, winter 2007, published by the International Jugglers’ Association. He is also a playwright whose plays are published by Broadway Play Publishing in NYC.
