Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Ledger Looking Back 25 Years Later: 12/24/1997

December 24, 1997

It was a remarkable year for Whitehall sculptors Bruce and Kathy Contway. Bruce, one-quarter Sioux, was recently named the Indian Arts and Crafts Association (IACA) Artist of the Year, and Kathy was awarded the chuckwagon race outriders bronze. Bruce and Kathy lived with their five horses west of Whitehall on a modest 10-acre ranch that includes a foundry. They converted an old garage into the foundry - the only one in Jefferson County. Bruce and Kathy have sold art all around the world.

A federal judge ruled that the “no-knock search” used by law officers during the drug raid south of Whitehall was legal and did not violate constitutional rights. U.S. District Judge Charles Lovell denied a motion by Jason and Theresa Jo Schwartz, Mitch Bakken, and Eric Decker - all arrested after an August 6th daybreak drug raid on a modular home south of Whitehall - that evidence gathered at the raid not be admissible during trial. In denying the motion, Lovel said the “no-knock search” was warranted because officers had firsthand information about weapons and drugs on the premises.

Whitehall Student of the Week was Jessica Bell who was selected for her math skills, her great work habits, her help of fellow students, and her extra work in Mathematics. Jessica is a sophomore and the daughter of Bruce and Patty Bell. She plans on attending college and enjoys sports, photography, and reading.

Whitehall Athlete of the Week was senior Travis Handl. Travis, a post player of the varsity boys' basketball team, dominated the Twin Tourney during Whitehall’s opening weekend and played two strong games against Three Forks and Townsend. Travis punctuated Whitehall’s win over Townsend with a game-ending thunder dunk. Travis is the son of Ed and Betty Handl and has plans to attend college.
