MARCH 4, 1998

Three of every four trees on town property in Whitehall are in good to fair condition. Mark Lennon, a Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation community forester conducted the first-ever tree inventory of Whtiehall’s 369 public trees and presented his findings to the Vision 2010 Committee. His findings included: Whitehall has 14 species totaling 369 trees. Of the 369, 179 (49 percent) were in good condition, 99 (27 percent) were in fair condition, 85 (23 percent) were in poor condition and six trees were dead or dying. Of the 14 species of trees on public land within Whitehall, green ash is predominant, totaling 213 or 58 percent of the total number of trees. Silver poplar is the next most popular tree, at 40 trees, followed by cottonwood, juniper, and willow.

Seven candidates, many of them filing close to the deadline, have filed as candidates for Whitehall Board of Trustees. Neither of the two incumbents - Casey Ballard and Eric Tolf - filed for re-election.

The Whitehall Lady Trojans overpowered Three Forks 15-9, 15-9, 15-12 to end the regular season 16-1 and take the top seed in the District 4-B Volleyball Tournament.

The Trojans stunned number three seed Jefferson High School 60-56 to open the 4-B District Basketball Tournament, then lost senior star Travis Handl and games to Columbus (80-65) and Townsend (51-38) to end their season 8-13.

Whitehall Athlete of the Week was Hans Tolf. Tolf, a senior, scored 40 points and was the floor leader and emotional leader for the Trojans at the 4-B District Basketball Tournament. When senior Travis Handl went down with an injury, Tolf wore Travis’ #42 and led a spirited Trojan effort. Tolf’s hustle and determination were contagious and Whitehall almost knocked off tournament champions Columbus.

Whitehall Student of the Week was Jennifer Williams. She was nominated by Susie Tilton-Chiovaro for her “excellent attitude and enthusiasm for learning” in English class. Williams was a freshman and the daughter of Judiann and Jim Williams. She enjoyed skiing, traveling, and playing tennis.
