Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: May 6, 1998

Whitehall High School Academic team number two won first place in both the written competition and the oral competition at the First Annual Southwestern Academic Olympic contest held in Bozeman on May 4th. The team consisted of Meghan Hoopes, Augie Brower, Kyle Ross, Natasha Momsen, Heidi Sulzdorf, and alternates Mike Welch and Jan Malinchak.

Ken Kinzer, a science teacher at Whitehall High School, was honored by Montana State University-Bozeman as a Montana “Influential Teacher.” The award came through the nomination of former WHS student Holly Andren, a student at MSU-Bozeman.

More than two dozen Whitehall area pianists performed in a recital at the First Christian Church in Whitehall on April 30. The recital featured students of the Musical Moments Studio taught by Donna Weldon. The performers played a rich diversity of music that included everything from Beethoven to the theme song of the movie Titanic.

Whitehall Student of the Week was Junior Tina Raisor for her great attitude in Vo. Math and her willingness to help other students. She was nominated by teacher Carole Cogdill. Tina is the daughter of Ed Raisor and has plans to be a kindergarten teacher. Tina enjoys reading, going out with friends, and babysitting.

Whitehall Athlete of the Week was #2 singles tennis player Katie Dawson. Coach Duston Jones said Katie had become increasingly more competitive and believed she would play well at divisionals and earn a spot in the state tournament. Katie is the daughter of Anne Marie and Mike Carey. She plans to major in biomedicine at MSU and enjoys drama, key club, and rodeo club.
