PAINTING THE TOWN: Tom Wheeler was contracted to paint the Whitehall Masonic Lodge building on Main Street, and on Saturday morning, August 8, he was doing some trim and finishing work on the Lodge metalwork above the main entrance. Wheeler started prep work for the job in mid-July and started painting on August 4. The building was originally built in 1939 and Wheeler said the teal trim and cream body coating will give the building "a little more character, and a warmer feeling."

August 12, 1998

An August 31, 1998, District Court date was set at the Jefferson County Courthouse in Boulder for Christopher Lerman, the youth charged in the Whitehall Railroad Depot fire. Lerman, 14, was charged with felony negligent arson and misdemeanor trespass in the wake of the March 24 fire that razed the historic depot near Legion Avenue in Whitehall.

Bill Dietz arrived in Whitehall in late July and assumed his new duties as principal of Whitehall High School on August 1. Dietz had been a grade 7-12 principal in Reedsville, Wisconsin prior to his move to Whitehall. Dietz and wife...
