Children Need a Few Weeks to Adjust to New School Year Bedtime Schedules

Adopting healthy sleep habits will help children as they prepare to return to the classroom, says Intermountain Health pediatrician Meghan Hicks, MD.

Sleep habits are essential to establish in young children in order for them to have a solid foundation of healthy sleep. Dr. Hicks said sleep is a critical time for mental and physical development, especially in children. Kids who get adequate sleep often have better attention, behaviors, learning, and memory.

Generally, children ages 6-12 should get 9 to 12 hours of sleep. Teenagers need 8 to 10 hours, she said.
