Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: 9/2/1998

SEPTEMBER 2, 1998

A lightning-strike fire near the Jefferson River shortly before midnight on Saturday night, August 29 burned approximately 160 acres, forced a one-day closure of Lewis & Clark Caverns, and took the collective efforts of close to 150 firefighters to control. Linda Williams, information officer for the Greer Gulch Fire, said the fire started about 11:30 PM on private land, about 1.25 miles northeast of Highway 2 and the Lewis & Clark State Park Campground.

Tony Nix of Whitehall has pled guilty to felony assault and criminal endangerment stemming from a domestic dispute on March 21, 1998, and is expected to be sentenced to five years at Montana State Penitentiary near Deer Lodge. Reports show that Nix pointed a gun and fired a round into the doorframe where his stepdaughter, Denise McCoy, was standing. In addition, Nix's wife, Ianne Nix, received a broken nose, black eye, bruised ribs, and bruised shoulders during the March 21 incident. Reports indicate that Tony Nix pushed and kicked Ianne Nix.

Nearly 100 firefighters were fighting a fire that was reported the afternoon of Tuesday, September 1 near Bear Gulch, in the foothills of the Tobacco Root Mountains south of Whitehall and about six miles northeast of Twin Bridges. Firefighters on the scene called in two air tankers and support aircraft to drop fire retardant on the blaze, which had burned about 100 acres of sagebrush and Douglas fir.
