UPDATE: Female Drowning Victim Identified

A 20-year-old Butte woman died on Sunday night after the kayak she was in on Delmoe Lake tipped over, according to Jefferson County Sheriff Tom Grimsrud.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the scene at around 10 p.m. on Sunday after a friend of the victim on the other side of the lake called 911 after hearing a male yelling for a female.

The single-person kayak with a square stern had been occupied by the male, female and a dog.

The victim, identified as Abigail Richards, was found by first responders deceased and floating in the lake. Responding agencies included Jefferson Valley Search and Rescue, Gallatin County Search and Rescue, and Life Flight.

Grimsrud says this was one of six deaths reported in Jefferson County on Sunday. Two bodies were discovered in a Boulder home, and there were also three hospice deaths.
