Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: 9/9/1998

SEPTEMBER 9, 1998

Smoldering cottonwood tree limbs erupted into a full blaze at the Whitehall dump on Tuesday, September 1 and county officials were considering a range of options to prevent a repeat incident.

Moist cool air and scattered rain showers on Labor Day dampened the emergency fire threat in southwestern Montana, and crews at the Bear Gulch fire south of Whitehall were pulled off the fire on September 6th.

Augie Brower and Jackson Truckle were selected to perform at the 1998 Montana High School All-State Music Festival at the University of Montana-Missoula in October. Brower, who played the tuba, would be making his third appearance at the festival, and Truckle would sing in the All-State Choir. The two were selected after submitting audition tapes. Hundreds of tapes were submitted, and only a select few were chosen to perform. Truckle was the first Whitehall choir member selected for the All-State Choir in several years.

Student of the week was senior Kyle Ross. Kyle was nominated by teacher Bill Herbolich for his work in Trigonometry, Functions, and Statistics. "Kyle works hard and has a very good attitude." He is a senior this year and is the son of Terry and Kathy Ross. Kyle has plans to attend college, most likely MSU. He enjoys soccer, reading, and hanging out.

Kate Mulligan was selected as Athlete of the Week for helping the Lady Trojans to a 2-0 start to the 1998 basketball season. Coach Kieckbusch said, "Kate will be looked upon as a leader for the Lady Trojans this season." Kate, a senior, is the daughter of Tim and Andrea Mulligan and has plans to attend college and major in nursing. Kate enjoys sports, boat racing, phrenology, and tracing the origin of the Latin language.
