Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Local Whitehall Girl Scout Goes Batty

In an effort to connect with nature, learn valuable outdoor skills, and promote environmental stewardship, Whitehall Girl Scout Amelia Schober recently participated in the Girl Scouts Love State Parks event at Lost Creek State Park in Anaconda, Montana. Amelia joined hundreds of other scouts across the region in this year's Girl Scouts Love State Parks events, which encourages young girls and their families to explore their local state parks, engage in conservation activities, develop a deeper appreciation for the great outdoors, and even learn about fascinating creatures like bats.

The event, held annually, aims to instill a sense of responsibility and love for nature among the young scouts while fostering a lifelong commitment to environmental conservation. Amelia and her fellow scouts spent a memorable evening at Lost Creek State Park, immersed in activities like hiking, wildlife observation, and games. One highlight of the day was a special session on bats, where the girls learned about these nocturnal creatures and the vital role they play in our Montana ecosystem. To make learning about bats even more exciting, they played an echolocation game, simulating the way bats use sound to navigate in the dark. This hands-on encounter with nature left a lasting impression on the girls, fostering a deeper connection to the environment and a commitment to its protection.

Girl Scouts of all ages take part in Love State Parks, with the aim of inspiring the next generation of environmentalists and park enthusiasts. "Being a part of the Girl Scouts Love State Parks event was so fun," Amelia shared. "I got to learn so much about nature, especially bats and how important they are. I hope to inspire others to appreciate and care for our state parks and the creatures that call them home." Her involvement in the Girl Scouts Love State Parks event reminds us that young individuals like her hold the power to make a significant impact on our world. We look forward to seeing more young environmentalists follow in her footsteps, armed with knowledge and passion, and continuing to make a difference in our local communities and beyond.
