Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Between the Stacks: 9/20/2023

It was in September 1944 that Anne Frank and the inhabitants of the Secret Annex arrived at Auschwitz and it seems fitting that the Library will begin its third year of the Holocaust Project. The Holocaust Book Discussion Group will meet on Thursday, September 28th at 6 PM and is open to teens and adults. Due to the topic content, it is not recommended for children under 12. The project covers Holocaust Literature, awareness projects such as the Survivor/Rescuer Fair, trips to Holocaust museums, speakers, conversations with survivors, and more. Anyone interested in joining this year may contact the Library at 406-287-3763. The project runs from September through May each year.

Next Monday evening is the History Book Club at 6 PM. We will be discussing any book which takes place outside of the European continent. Readers are choosing books from India, the United States, and more. If you are interested in joining the club just come to the next meeting.

The 21st Century students are spending some time on Friday mornings at the Library doing an international study. For the first two weeks, we have explored Nepal and the wonderful customs and culture they bring to the world. As many of you know it is the home of Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world. What you may not know is that it is the only country that has a living goddess, whom the country adores. The students have had a great time finding the “eye” symbol on buildings, discovering the different types of marketplaces they use to sell food, and watching children go to school by pulling themselves across rivers in a little metal box. We will be visiting six different countries this fall and experimenting with crafts, flag-making, food preparation, and other cultural events.

Speaking of food preparation, we have had several generous people drop off extra produce from their gardens to share with the community. Thank you for all of the tomatoes, zucchini, squash, and cucumbers that we have been able to give to those who can no longer garden or just would love some homegrown veggies.

The staff is still weeding the collection so watch for new books in the book sale. Books are discarded when they have not been checked out in 4-5 years, depending on the category, or have physical problems that can not be mended. All hardbacks are 20 cents and paperbacks are 10 cents so you can’t beat the price! All proceeds go to the Friends of the Library to be used for children’s programs, new technology, special events, and more.
