Longtime Whitehall Eatery Closes: Pepper Tree Deli Owners Look to Future

"It breaks my heart more than you know that we were not able to find someone to continue on this wonderful sandwich shop and deli," Pepper Tree Deli owner Dana Brunet said with a half-hearted smile.

The Pepper Tree Deli, purchased by the Brunets in 2018, has been a staple on Legion Avenue, surviving COVID-19 in 2020, business ups and downs, and more. Their delicious sandwiches, sides, and ice cream will be severely missed, as Whitehall's eateries are now down by one once again.

"We've had our struggles and adventures, and some of our customers have become close friends, like family. We thank everyone for the memories, laughs, tears, and blessings. I truly believe God has blessed us and sometimes the hard things we go through in life are the greatest blessings of all," Brunet said.

The Pepper Tree, owned and operated by Brunet, her oldest daughter Samara Doran, and youngest daughter Shayna Brunet, along with a crew that became like family, closed its doors for good on Friday, September 15, 2023. The business had been up for sale for the last six months, but Brunet believed it was time to cut ties, sell the equipment, and move forward.

The deli created not only fresh sandwiches but jobs for both of Brunets girls as they made their way through high school and college, as well as jobs for the Whitehall community.

"It's been a privilege to work closer with our community these last five and a half years - not just being behind the scenes, but getting to personally know so many of our wonderful community members," Brunet said. "We've also employed some pretty awesome people over the years."

The Pepper Tree not only served the public, but provided food for the Sheriff's Department, Fire Department, wildfire crews, local events, travelers, and the homeless when called upon. The Pepper Tree Deli was also always on hand to make food for Chamber events and fed dozens of actors in the annual haunted house.

But all good things must come to an end. Earlier this year Samara gave birth to her daughter Emberlyn Mae, a tiny micro-preemie born at just 27 weeks. Priorities for the Brunets and the Dorans shifted with her arrival. Focusing on Emberlyn is now key; Shayna is looking forward to her future as well, and Dana is excited to spend more time with her husband, daughters, and little grandbaby.

"It's a little scary because I feel like I don't have a purpose now," Brunet admitted but knows she will enjoy the unfettered family time in her future.

A public sale of Pepper Tree Deli equipment and supplies will be held this Wednesday through Friday, September 20 - 22, from 3 PM to 6 PM. Stop in to grab up some great deals on equipment, but also to wish the former owners the best of luck in their future endeavors.

"We will not say goodbye, it's see you soon, and thanks for coming," Brunet said.
