After hearing 17 different witnesses during the October 5-6 trial, a Jefferson County jury found Jason Marker guilty of aggravated assault by accountability for his role in the January 2, 1998, Mint Bar incident, but reached no verdict on two counts of misdemeanor assault. Marker, 22, was charged with aggravated assault for kicking Bill Arnold in the head. Arnold suffered a broken nose, broken cheek, broken eye socket, and broken jaw during a violent incident that occurred close to midnight on the night of January 2nd, in the Mint Bar in Whitehall. Arnold underwent extensive facial surgery and three metal plates were attached to facial bones to repair damage to his face and skull.

A criminal case involving a Whitehall resident was resolved in Montana District Court in Boulder on September 29th and as the result of one agreement a Whitehall man received a five-year prison sentence. Tony Nix of Whitehall was sentenced by District Judge Frank Davis to five years in prison for charges stemming from a March 21st incident at the Nix residence on Whitetail Road. Nix pled guilty to felony assault and criminal endangerment. Legal documents indicate that Nix pointed a gun and fired a round into the doorframe where his stepdaughter was standing. Nix's wife also suffered a broken nose, black eye, bruised ribs, and bruised shoulders after being pushed and kicked by Nix.

District Court Judge Frank Davis ordered the Jefferson Valley Baptist Church fire suspect to spend 90 days in the Montana State Hospital in Warm Springs as he was unfit to proceed to trial due to mental illness.
