Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: 10/28/1998

OCTOBER 28, 1998

Improved communication between town employees and town elected officials, and a clearer delineation of duties and responsibilities were two of the suggestions for improved town council productivity discussed during a special Whitehall Town Council meeting on October 20. For the past few years, through two different town administrations, relationships and the working environment among the mayor, council, and employees had been strained, and at times close to volatile. The Settlement Center, a conflict resolution organization located in Big Timber, was contracted by the Witness for Peace and Civility organization in Whitehall to determine if relationships among Whitehall elected officials could be improved and town government operate more effectively.

As of 8:00 PM on Tuesday, October 27, there was no official word from Placer Dome about the future of Golden Sunlight Mine. As part of a Placer Dome corporate meeting, company officials wanted to review a care and maintenance plan for Golden Sunlight. Under the care and maintenance option, only a skeletal crew of about 20 of Golden Sunlight's current workforce of 207 would remain.

Whitehall High School Creative Leader of the Week was Colene Dolan. Colene was "Leader" this week for being chosen as the WHS representative to the state leadership seminar in Missoula, "which helps to motivate and develop future leaders...that will serve them and us well in the future." Colene is a sophomore and the daughter of Pat and Diane Dolan. Colene enjoys singing, playing the piano, and wrestling.

Whitehall Student of the Week was Nicole Janacaro, who was nominated by teacher Carole Cogdill for her great attitude and working very hard in Vocational English. Nicole is a sophomore and the daughter of Mark and Rhonda Janacaro. College is in Nicole's plans for the future. She enjoys basketball and tennis.

Whitehall High School Athletes of the Week were Angela Lofftus and Mitch Cunningham. Hats off to you, Annie and Mitch, for a great end of a season that was filled with highlights. Annie and Mitch both received All-State honors at the state cross country meet on Saturday, October 24 for placing in the top 15 places. Annie is the daughter of Sharon and David Lofftus, and Mitch is the son of Georgia and Don Tamietti. They are both juniors and plan on attending college in the future.
