Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

The Whitehall Town Council vote on November 30 to direct the town attorney to challenge a Montana Attorney General opinion was apparently illegally conducted because the council failed to obtain a majority vote to approve the motion. The dilemma was this: the vote itself was on a matter dealing with conflict of interest, and three members of the council abstained from voting because they could have had a conflict of interest on the issue voted upon. Montana state law requires a majority of council members to vote to approve a measure, and four votes is a majority of six members, not three votes.

Jefferson County has received more reported dog bites in the past several months than ever before. When dog bites are reported to county officials, state law requires the incident to be investigated and information gathered to determine the possibility of rabies exposure. Jefferson County adopted a Vicious Animal Ordinance in December of 1996 to aid in enforcing rabies control.

Whitehall Student of the Week was Jenny Dawson. She was selected because she has the highest average in French II. Teacher Susie Tilton-Chiovaro says Jenny has a "great attitude." Jenny, a senior, is the daughter of Mike and Anne Marie Carey. She has plans to attend college, with medicine being her chosen field. Jenny enjoys tennis, photography, and skiing.

Whitehall Athletes of the Week were the Lady Trojan seniors Kietra Mabbott, Kim Franich, Kate Mulligan, Holly Dietz, and CoCo Martinson. They received athletic honors for their "hard work ethic and undying spirit and courage in the face of adversity." The five seniors led Whitehall to the state basketball tournament, where Whitehall beat Three Forks and just narrowly missed a huge upset over Manhattan.

WHS Creative Leader of the Week was Erin Jones. Erin shows leadership and responsibility in the choir, and she brings a lot of enthusiasm and fun to each rehearsal," says choir director Mary Brazill. Erin also helps out as an aide in sixth-grade music. She is a senior and the daughter of Gordon and Karen Jones. She plans on attending college next year, and possibly going into physical therapy. Erin enjoys cheerleading, working with kids, music, and pets.
