The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) continued to internally process possible permit violations and water quality violations against Golden Sunlight Mine, but fines would not be calculated or agreed upon until the end of January 1999. In the meantime, Golden Sunlight reported that its remediation efforts had successfully identified and contained contamination from an apparent leak at a tailings impoundment site within Golden Sunlight property.

The Whitehall Volunteer Fire Department was one of more than a dozen volunteer fire departments in southwest Montana raising funds through the sales of Christmas ornaments. The first edition firefighters' ornament was hand-painted and depicted a 1920s pumper fire truck. The unique ornament was part of a collector's series and proceeds from the sale were earmarked to help local rural fire departments.

Whitehall Student of the Week was freshman Sarah Stratton. She was nominated by Bill Herbolich for excellent work in math class. Sarah is the daughter of Frank and LaFay Stratton. She is planning on attending college after high school. Sarah enjoys volleyball, basketball, soccer, and track.

Whitehall Athlete of the Week was senior Brandon Kidwell. Kidwell was averaging 18.5 ppg and shooting 44% from 3-point range. Coach Jeff Kreis was impressed with Brandon's shooting and all-around play. Brandon was shooting 49% from the field and was averaging 4 rebounds and 2 assists per game. He is the son of Mike and Kim Kidwell.

WHS Creative Leader of the Week was Jennifer Dolan. She was nominated by her peers on the Student Council for her leadership qualities. Jennifer is a senior and the daughter of Pat and Diane Dolan. She has plans to attend college where she'll study nursing. Jennifer's hobbies are jogging and Young Life.
