Fundraising efforts for the Whitehall Library expansion project kicked into high gear, and during a January 13 meeting the Whitehall Library Building Committee gave the go-ahead to a Sunday, March 14 Luck 'o the Library dinner fundraiser. The dinner was planned to feature a St. Patrick's Day theme and according to plans, 50 Whitehall area couples would pay $100 per couple to attend the prime rib dinner.

David Gerber, after taking medication for 13 weeks at the Montana State Hospital in Warm Springs, is mentally fit to stand trial, according to a state psychologist at the Montana State Hospital. Gerber, who allegedly deliberately set fire to the Jefferson Baptist Church in Whitehall on July 2, 1998, had been deemed mentally unfit to stand trial by two mental health doctors who evaluated him in late summer 1998, and in October District Judge Frank Davis ordered Gerber to the Montana State Hospital for 90 days. Gerber, a diagnosed schizophrenic, was described as "stabilized" by his medication.

Mrs. Loomis's fifth-grade social studies classes presented a play that depicted the events surrounding the Boston Massacre. The play was called A Trial in Boston.

Monthly Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) information showed snowpack levels at 115 percent of normal and 153 percent of January 1998 snowpack for the Jefferson River watershed, and the Madison was 112 percent of normal and 166 percent of 1998's snowpack levels.

Whitehall Student of the Week was junior Waylon DuBois for a good attitude and hard work in Carole Cogdill's Vo English III class. Waylon is the son of Dorothy DuBois Jordan. He has plans to attend college. Waylon enjoys hunting, football, and weightlifting.

Whitehall Athlete of the Week was Lady Trojan volleyball player Cortney Smith, who led Whitehall in kills, blocks, and digs in the three-game sweep of Class A Dillon. Coach Theresa Adams praised Cortney's hitting, court vision, and overall play. Cortney, a junior, also plays basketball for WHS. She is the daughter of Rich and Pam Smith.

WHS Creative Leader of the Week was Lacie Richards for her talents in choir. Director Mary Brazill said, "Lacie is an excellent choir student. She possesses an enormous amount of talent." Brazill also said that Lacie worked very hard to improve her musical skills and was a role model. Lacie is the daughter of Doug and Jan Richards. She hopes to play college basketball in Anchorage. Lacie enjoys basketball, soccer, volleyball, and singing.
