JANUARY 27, 1999

On Friday, January 22, icy conditions caused a school bus carrying 30 Willow Creek basketball players and fans to hit a jack-knifed semi-truck head-on on Highway 41 south of Whitehall. Montana Highway Patrol Officer Jay Nelson of Whitehall said the southbound truck lost traction on the icy road around 10:55 PM as it climbed the hill approx. a mile and a half north of Silver Star. The truck then slid backward down the hill and jack-knifed across both lanes of the two-lane road. One to two minutes later, the school bus approached the hill from the south at 25-35 mph, said Nelson. The driver, Betty Wilcox of Three Forks, slowed the bus, but conditions were extremely icy and the bus slid downhill and hit the truck. Six Willow Creek youths were treated on the scene for cuts and bruises. No injuries required hospitalization.

The Knights of Columbus annual Free Throw Championship was held on January 24 in the Whitehall High School varsity gym. Winners in each age bracket were: 10 - Tanya Robuck, Cale Fritts; 11 - Kaylyn Lucas, Forrest Lewton; 12 - Kristen Leverton, Anthony Janacaro; 13 - Keely Sacry, Jim Truckle; 14 - Darci Battaiola, Jason Edsall.
