Ledger Looking Back 25 Years

April 28, 1999

The problem of sludge build-up at the Whitehall sewage treatment lagoons is typical of small system lagoons, said an environmental specialist with the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), who also said the town isn't required to do any further immediate sludge clean-up at the lagoons. Bill Bahr, with the DEQ planning, prevention, and assistance division, said that Whitehall officials have the option to either continue the removal of the accumulated sludge and remove all the sludge or stop now since the lagoon pipe inlet is cleared and the flow into the lagoon is back to normal.

The on-again, off-again Whitetail Road construction project is off again. The $3.5 million project would upgrade about 10 miles of Whitetail Road from the interstate underpass north toward Boulder, which has been on the drawing boards for nearly a decade. The latest word from the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is that delays in right-of-way acquisition will delay construction to the year 2000 and possibly even later.

Whitehall Student of the Week was freshman Jason Grace. Vocational teacher Kathy Ross nominated Jason, who is "an enthusiastic cook and puts in the extra effort to make sure the food is prepared correctly." Jason is the son of Ed and Vickie Grace. He enjoys camping, fishing, bike riding, canoeing, and hunting.

Whitehall's Athlete of the Week was defending state Class B triple jump champion Mike Welch, who appeared well on his way to successfully defending his title. Mike jumped 44-5 to win the triple jump in Bozeman. Track coach Mike Battaiola said Mike's effort was "simply an outstanding jump." Mike is one of Whitehall's best athletes and a standout football and defensive basketball player.

WHS Creative Leader of the Week was junior Laura Dillon. She was nominated because of her competent leadership in organizing this year's prom, which was well-planned and beautifully decorated. Laura is also the junior class president. She is the daughter of Joe and Charlene Dillon, and she has plans to attend college after graduation. Laura enjoys tennis, drama, and music.
