NOVEMBER 24, 1999: Whitehall officially received recognition as a "certified city" under the Montana Certified Community Program, and the Whitehall Chamber of Commerce has the plaque to prove it. The Certified Community Project has been around for a decade and rewards communities and counties for local economic development efforts. With the recognition under the program comes the potential to obtain state grants and other funding to help with Chamber activities and economic development projects.
Drugs are a serious problem in Whitehall, Montana Highway Patrol Officer Jay Nelson told a crowd of about 60 people at the Whitehall High School commons on November 22. Nelson said it will take a parental and a community commitment to address that problem. Nelson was invited by the Whitehall Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) to present drug awareness information to parents and community members.
Whitehall High School Student of the Week was junior Tavery Reher, an aide in the high school office. WHS Secretary Mary Ann Larsen says, "Tavery is very reliable and prompt at whatever she is asked to do." Tavery is the daughter of Jerry and Roberta Reher, as well as Deborah and Randy Morrison. She has college plans and enjoys being with friends and doing new things.
Whitehall High School Athletes of the Week were the Trojan Football All-State Players. Bill Battaiola was named to the District 4-B All-Conference Second Team as a fullback and earned an honorable mention as a linebacker. Also earning 4-B All-Conference honorable mention are Tanner Gooch as a linebacker and center, cornerback Zach McLean, and running back Doug McCollum. All four Trojans are seniors and helped form the team's leadership core.
WHS Creative Leader of the Week was Nick Gallagher for his willingness to serve on several WHS Student Council committees, sell candy, read announcements, and collect money at dances. Nick, a junior, was nominated by WHS Principal Randy Cline. Nick is the son of Neil and Lee Ann Gallagher and plans on attending college to major in drama and music.
