The April 2nd meeting of Whitehall Indivisible had 17 people present with one new face (welcome!)
First up was the big item of the week that stood out in people’s minds: Senator Cory Booker’s 25-hour filibuster, Washington State Rep Pramila Jayapal’s work with resistance and protest, the Signal app chat, law firms caving to Trump’s targeting, proxy voting victory in in the US House of Reps with bipartisan support, more executive orders, massive cuts to Health & Human Services, elimination of due process for legal and possibly illegal (who knows?) immigrants from Venezuela with deportation to a prison in El Salvador, the criminalization of miscarriage in Georgia, and Wisconsin’s rejection of Musk’s money.
We received correspondence from Senator Becky Beard and Rep Marta Bertoglio, acknowledging our correspondence and engagement.
This week we discussed multiple Montana bills with federal ramifications, if passed, and we applauded multiple bills that we had opposed that did in fact die.
We discussed the “Hands Off” rallies this coming Saturday, April 5th, and we plan to have Whitehall people in multiple locations.
As with every meeting, several intriguing concepts were mentioned that bear further investigation: Geofencing, The New Apostolic Reformation, the Khan Academy Constitution 101 course, and two books by Timothy Snyder: On Tyranny and On Freedom.
Finally, Icee prices at Whitehall’s historic Star Theater could increase due to Trump’s tariffs. Gold Junction Presents received a letter from the Icee syrup vendor stating that prices will increase since syrup ingredients are sourced in Canada, Mexico, and China. Might want to take more cash to the movies soon.
Whitehall Indivisible is a pro-democracy, nonpartisan group of locals (with some Basin additions) who are concerned about our country. We meet at the Whitehall Community Library from 6 PM to 7 PM. Everyone is welcome, and we hope to see you.
