How to Keep Your Smart Home Devices Secure

In today’s connected world, smart home devices—like voice assistants, thermostats, doorbells, and security cameras—make life more convenient. But with convenience comes responsibility. These devices are connected to the internet, which means they can also be vulnerable to hackers if not properly secured. Fortunately, there are simple steps anyone can take to protect their smart home.

Change Default Passwords

Most smart devices come with a factory-set password that’s often easy to guess. The first thing you should do is change it to something unique and strong. Avoid using names or birthdays—use a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. If a device doesn’t let you change the password, consider not using it.

Keep Software Up to Date

Just like your phone or computer, smart devices receive updates to fix security flaws. Make sure you install updates when they become available. Many devices allow you to turn on automatic updates in their settings.

Use a Separate Wi-Fi Network

Most routers allow you to create a “guest network.” Put your smart home devices on this separate network so they’re not on the same system as your phones, laptops, or work computers. This can limit the damage if a smart device gets compromised.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

If your smart device’s app offers two-factor authentication, turn it on. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a code sent to your phone or email before logging in.

Avoid Cheap or Unknown Brands

Stick with well-known manufacturers that have a good track record of providing security updates. Bargain devices might save money upfront but can be risky in the long run if they don’t offer proper support.

Turn Off Features You Don’t Use

Many devices come with features like remote access or voice control. If you’re not using them, it’s safer to turn them off.

Smart homes are here to stay, but security should always be a priority. By taking just a few minutes to review your devices and settings, you can protect your privacy and enjoy the benefits of a connected home with peace of mind.
