Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Henry W. Tavenner, 96

Harry W. Tavenner passed away in Helena, Montana on May 16, 2025, at the age of 96.

Born in Idaho Falls, Idaho, Harry was the fourth child of Harry and Julia (Greene) Tavenner. He graduated from Klamath Falls High School before serving in the U.S. Army during World War II as part of the Chemical Corps. After his honorable discharge, Harry earned a degree in Animal Science from Oregon State University and began his career as a county extension agent. He later completed a Master's degree in Animal Husbandry from the University of Maryland.

Harry dedicated much of his life to agricultural development. He spent four years in Vietnam as an agricultural consultant with USAID, contributing his expertise in challenging environments. Upon retiring at age 65, his commitment to service continued when he joined the Peace Corps, volunteering in both Chile and Guatemala.

In his later years, Harry made his home along the Columbia River Gorge in Lyle, Washington-a place he deeply cherished. In 2012, he moved to Montana to be closer to his family.

In accordance with his wishes, Harry's ashes will be spread beneath the oak trees along the Columbia River later this summer-a final return to the landscape he loved.

Harry is survived by his children: Chris (Gretchen) Tavenner of Hayden, ID; Martin (Debbie) Tavenner of Aztec, NM; and Rachel (Tom) Monforton of Whitehall, MT. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Harry's Whitehall family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Whitehall Medical and Dental Clinic, as well as the team at Meadowlark Manor. Their patience and kindness truly exemplify the best of small-town Montana.
