Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Whitehall Indivisible: Weekly Recap

Whitehall Indivisible (WI) hopes to see a strong community turnout in July for our guest speakers: July 2, the Transparent Election Initiative, July 9, Candidate for US Senate Reilly Neill, and July 30 Friends of the Third Branch, all during our regular Wednesday meeting time at 6 PM (see ad).

We are discussing who we would like to invite for future months. Suggestions are the US Congressional delegation or, better yet, a well-informed aide. We target nonpartisan or potentially relevant partisan speakers we should learn about.

Ryan Busse of Public Land Warriors will present in August about the work to prevent public land sell-offs.

We discussed Governor Gianforte’s ongoing vetoes of bills that passed the state legislature this year. The dust hasn’t settled yet.

The war in Iran and the Senate’s modifications to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) are changing quickly. Retired Navy Commander Bobby Jones on Substack has good insight into the former, and no one seems to have good insight into the latter, a predictable problem when so many complicated concepts are stuffed into one massive bill.

The Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, which includes Montana Senator Steve Daines, has reinserted the language about selling public lands that was removed in the House. The House of Representatives had previously removed this language. Cuts to healthcare and increases to the deficit continue to be problematic.

On July 5th, there will be a rally in Butte to show support for the Montana/Canada trade relationship. Indivisible groups from Anaconda, Butte, and Whitehall are hosting this rally. More information is available on Facebook.

We reviewed a new organization: “Our Republican Legacy.” This nationwide organization of traditional Republicans is uniting through shared values of the Republican Party as it was known in previous years. For politically homeless readers, it might be a sane option.

As always, we hope more civic-minded people attend our 6 PM Wednesday nonpartisan meetings at the Whitehall School library. Parking is easiest on the east side near the tennis courts, with entry through the glass double doors off Yellowstone. Everyone is welcome, and we hope to see you.
