Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: August 23, 2000

The summer of 2000 in the Jefferson Valley will be remembered for drought and smoke, but not for wildfires. Layers of smoke and ash have engulfed the Jefferson Valley for the past month, with the smoke so thick it triggered smoke alarms in homes. Ash covered vehicles, windowsills, and virtually everything else in the valley. The ash flies up on paved roads like dust on a gravel road when vehicles pass.

WHS Organizer of the Week: WHS Booster Club. The Whitehall High School Booster Club promotes Whitehall athletes and the WHS athletic program, and is looking to expand its efforts at its preseason organizational meeting.

WHS Volunteer/Good Neighbor of the Week: Calligrapher Carilyn Jenkin. Jenkin will soon be putting her touch on the eighth Whitehall Lewis & Clark Mural. Each of the murals has a passage (or more than one) from Expedition journals that tells the story of the mural. Muralist Kit Mather says, "She [Carilyn] does a beautiful job. She is very precise, and the passages are a vital part of the mural." Carilyn also does matting and framing, glass etching, silk screening, and signs.

WHS Athlete of the Week: O-Mok-See Point Winners. Congratulations to Larisa Beryrand, Samantha Chatriand, Kari Chatriand, and Kathy Contway, the point winners in the Whitehall Saddle Club 200 O-Mok-See Series. Larisa, Samantha, Kari, and Kathy competed in the six O-Mok-See events all summer and earned themselves not only high point honors in their age category but beautiful, embroidered horse blankets as well.
