Between the Stacks: Week of September 17th

Due to the horrific events of last week, I would like to remind the adults who come into the Whitehall Community Library that we have many children here who have very active ears. Please be aware of the little ones around you and think about what you are saying aloud in a building that has better acoustics than the Metropolitan Opera House. The staff works very hard to make the library a safe place for everyone, but especially our many young readers.

The Jefferson Valley Community Foundation (JVCF) grant cycle is open, and organizations may pick up applications at the library. Applications may be returned to the Library before October 8th at 5 PM. The grant awarding event will be held on November 5th.

On Friday, September 19th, at 1 PM, the Teen History Book Club meets. The group is discussing books from all eras, both fiction and non-fiction. Any teen in the sixth grade and up is welcome to join us for these lively discussions.

The Kid's Quilting Class is still in need of blue jeans! The group needs 600 denim squares to match the 600 printed fabric squares for each quilt. The class has grown to 15 junior quilters. Both fabric and denim are needed! So, fellow quilters, if you have been meaning to clean out your fabric stash, this is a perfect time! Scraps are welcome as these will be scrap quilts, and the more different types of fabric, the better.

The Jefferson County Library Board meeting will be held in Boulder this month; anyone is welcome to attend. The Board meets on September 18th at 6:30 PM in the Boulder Library. The Whitehall and Boulder libraries swap locations every month; next month, the meeting will be in Whitehall.

The Whiteall Community Library's giant backlog of DVDs is dwindling, and new movies are hitting the shelves. It has been so much fun to replace many of the well-worn favorites with new discs, while also processing many new titles that the library hasn't had before. The biggest additions have been to the non-fiction section, where teachers of all types will be happy to see educational videos on history, science, nature, and more. Thank you to our friend John, who left his entire collection of DVDs to the library. They will be enjoyed by many.

Don't forget to sign up for the QPR class on September 26th at 1 PM at the library. This suicide prevention class is the best hour and a half you will spend all year in protecting those you love. If you haven't signed up online, call the library at 287-3763, and we will add you to the class list.
