Beware of Bank/Credit Union Scam

The Whitehall Ledger was informed by the Southwest Montana Federal Credit Union in Whitehall of a current scam targeting patrons.

A “bank” calls the customer, saying that their money is not “safe at its current location, and they are offering a safer alternative. The caller also advises the customer not to disclose the real reason for wiring money to the bank, but to state it is for a family member.

Six local individuals have been defrauded of approximately $75,000 through fraudulent wire transfers. SWMTFCU employee LaDonna Knox urges customers to contact their bank or FCU directly if they are ever contacted in this way, and to never wire money to anyone they do not personally know.
