Kathleen (Benner) Nylund, born October 15, 1944, entered the arms of Jesus on February 8, 2026, at the age of 81.
Kathy was born in Forsyth, Montana, to Willie and Marge and was the second of six children. The family moved to Billings when she was a young girl. Kathy graduated from Billings Central High School in 1963. In August 1963, Kathy married Richard Schmidt. To this union, five children were born: Robin, Rick, Christy, Stacy, and Jamie. Kathy and Richard later divorced.
Kathy had various jobs throughout her life, most of them working with the public, which she loved. One of her favorite jobs was working for the phone company in the early days, connecting callers and visiting with everyone. Kathy later worked at Wheat Montana, where she truly thrived. A natural social butterfly, she loved being around people and never met a stranger. She brought warmth, conversation, and a genuine kindness wherever she went. Everyone who knew Kathy talks about her smile. It was bright, welcoming, and unforgettable-a smile that made people feel at ease and at home. It reflected the joy she found in her family, her friends, and the simple pleasure of life.
In 2010, Kathy married Gary, and together they shared a wonderful chapter filled with love, laughter, travel, and adventure. They enjoyed camping and exploring, truly having a blast together and making special memories along the way.
Kathy was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend whose life was centered around her family. Her children were the pride and joy of her life. To her children, she was the most amazing mom: loving, selfless, and always there when they needed her most. Her love only grew as her family expanded, and she cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren.
Kathy showed her love through the work of her hands. She loved baking and filling her home with warmth and sweet treats. She enjoyed crafts of all kinds, especially knitting and crocheting beautiful pieces for those she loved. She also sewed clothes for her children and grandchildren, including matching pajamas for all of them. Her flower garden was another reflection of her nurturing spirit, blooming year after year under her devoted care.
She had a gift for creating comfort and connection. Whether she was baking for a holiday gathering, knitting something special for a new baby, crocheting gifts for loved ones, or working on her latest craft project, her hands were rarely still. Music, especially Neil Diamond, was often played in the background, providing the soundtrack to a life centered on home and heart.
Above all, Kathy was brave, courageous, and a true fighter. She faced life's challenges with strength and determination, never giving up and never losing the kindness that defined her. Her resilience was an inspiration to her family and all who knew her.
Kathy's legacy lives on in the traditions she created, the handmade treasures she leaves behind, and the deep love she instilled in her family. She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and remembered by all who were blessed to know her. Her family finds comfort knowing she is at peace in the presence of her Savior.
Kathy is survived by her daughters, Robin (Dale) Diede, Christy (Kevin) Turman, Stacy (Kurt) Johnston, and Jamie Schmidt, and her son, Rick (Rosemary) Schmidt. Grandchildren: Tara (Clay), Jennifer (Logan), Ami (Matt), TJ (Selina), Megan, Faith (Zach), Grace (Logan), Tori, Cole (McKenzie), Lexy, Abby, and Emma; nine great-grandchildren with one on the way; Brothers Jim, Gene, Ken, and sisters Karen and Esther.
Kathy is preceded in death by her parents, Majorie and Willie Benner; her husband, Gary Nylund; son-in-law, Tyler Markuson; granddaughter, Sateva Turman; and great-granddaughter, Brailie Nies.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Edgewood for their compassionate care, kindness, and support.
A Celebration of Life will be held later this summer, with details to be shared at that time.
