A remarkable collection decades in the making will be on display May 8-10 at the Montana Western Legacy Center, offering the public a rare glimpse into a lifetime shaped by music, passion, and personality.
The Montana Western Legacy Center, in partnership with Grit and Grace Collective, will host a special showcase of Bob "Ace" Kovacich's private collection from May 8 through May 10, with an invitation-only preview on May 7. This is your chance to own a piece of music history!
The exhibit will feature more than 200 instruments, including iconic brands such as Gibson, Taylor, Fender, and Martin guitars, alongside harmonicas, microphones, speakers, and keyboards. Beyond the instruments themselves, visitors will also find personal pieces like cowboy hats and canes-items that help tell the story of the man behind the collection.
This is more than a display of gear; it is a curated archive of a life deeply rooted in creativity and expression. Each instrument and artifact reflects not only musical history, but also the personality and spirit of the individual who gathered them. For attendees, the showcase offers both visual impact and a sense of connection-an opportunity to experience the breadth of one man's lifelong passion up close.
That man, Bob Kovacich - a Butte, Montana legend and musician who passed away in 2022, was known as much for his character as for his talent. He approached life with enthusiasm, humor, and a refusal to let hardship define him. While he acknowledged life's challenges, he chose not to dwell on them, instead focusing on what brought him joy-music, movement, and meaningful experiences.
Music, in particular, was central to who he was. Inspired early on by performers like Elvis Presley, Kovacich spent decades playing in bands, forming his own groups, and eventually performing as a solo entertainer. Even later in life, he remained dedicated to his craft, often playing for hours each day simply for the love of it.
But it was not just his musical ability that made him memorable. Kovacich had a flair for presentation and a love of stepping into different roles, whether as a cowboy, a biker, or a performer on stage. His energy and humor left lasting impressions, and he often used music as a way to connect with others-whether teaching students through song or entertaining residents in local care facilities with the simple goal of making them smile.
His collection, much like his life, was never random. What might have appeared at first glance to be an assortment of items revealed itself as something far more intentional: a reflection of decades of interests, adventures, and personal expression. Every piece held meaning, every object a memory.
Now, through this upcoming showcase, that deeply personal collection becomes something the wider community can experience. It stands not only as a testament to musical craftsmanship, but also as a tribute to a man who embraced life fully-living with passion, curiosity, and unmistakable style.
Whether you're a musician, collector, or just love a good treasure hunt, there's something here waiting to be discovered. Don't miss this once-in-a-lifetime event May 8–10, 10 AM – 5 PM at the Montana Western Legacy Center (415 N Whitehall St. in Whitehall).
