WHITETOP GALL MITES: A gall (sweeling in a plant) caused by the whitetop gall mite. These mites deform the flowers, seedheads, and stems, making the flower heads look like deformed broccoli. This greatly reduces seed production, damages and may eventually kill the plant. The mites are a new biological control agent, so we will not have many releases available this year; hopefully more will be available in future years.
The Whitehall Project has existed since the early 1990s and has raised, collected and redistributed over 1.4 million dollars' worth of noxious weed controlling insects, mites and fungus. We give these insects at no cost to landowners who want to add biological control to their land management strategies. In mid-May we hired two AmeriCorps MCC Conservation Interns, college students Bridget Danielson and Eleni Voulgaris, from Minnesota and Colorado respectively.
