Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: July 4, 2001

After three years of preparation for the "Journey of Discovery," the play finally premiered on June 29, 2001. The history of the Lewis and Clark Expedition was presented in this historical presentation, and it mostly focused on interactions between the Corps and Native Americans from St. Louis to the Rocky Mountains.

WHITEHALL ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Brian Carey. Brian Carey won the bareback bronc competition at seven high school rodeos in 2001 and took third place in the state, qualifying him for a trip to the NHSRF later in the month in Springfield, Illinois. Brian, a junior at WHS in the fall, may be the first WHS Rodeo Club member to ever qualify for the national high school rodeo. He is the son of Chris and Sandy Carey.

WHITEHALL COACHES OF THE WEEK: Bob Clark and Mark Nelson. Whitehall Babe Ruth coaches Bob Clark and Mark Nelson guided the Whitehall Renegades to first place during league play and third place in the conference tournament. Clark is coaching a team of 14- and 15-year-old players, and Allen is coaching a team of 13-year-old players in All-Star tournaments starting on Thursday, July 5, 2001. Clark and Nelson have several years of coaching experience, and both have been leaders and major supporters of the Whitehall baseball program.

WHITEHALL PERFORMER OF THE WEEK: Mike Mahony. Mike Mahony, a media specialist with the Bozeman public school system, has appeared in film and was active in Jackson Hole Fine Arts Theater productions. He portrays Captain Meriwether Lewis in "Journey of Discovery" and was one of the first leading actors to sign up for the performance. Mike does a nice job capturing Lewis' intensity, enthusiasm, frustration, and trepidation during the expedition.
