Mary Lou Hale passed away on July 1, 2026, at the age of 97. She was born in Cartersville, Montana, to Louis and Evelyn Roles; she was the youngest of five. The family moved to Miles City, MT, when she was nine years old. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School. Mary Lou moved to Whitehall, MT, in 1964 and worked at Boulder River School and Hospital for 16 years before retiring in 1980. Mary Lou married Charles (Chuck) Hale in December of 1981. After living in Whitehall for 27 years, they moved to Butte in 1991, where she has resided until her death.
Mary Lou Hale is survived by her son Gerald (Jerry) Johnson, her daughter Bonnie Schott, her four grandchildren - Beth Mow, Peggi Stokes, Josh Sever, and Kelsey Schott, and her six great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Linda Walsh (2011), and her husband, Chuck Hale (2019).
Mary Lou loved to dance and garden; you could always find her and Chuck at Borden's Hotel on a Sunday afternoon dancing with their friends until the sun went down.
Special thanks go to the care team at Intermountain Health for caring for Mom in her last few days and to her granddaughter, Kelsey.
Services will be held at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church in Whitehall, Montana, on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at 11 AM.
