Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: August 29, 2001

Whitehall school administrators knew they would see a drop in school enrollment; the only question was how big of a drop? The Whitehall Public Schools started the 2001-2002 school year on Monday, August 27, and a lot more kids showed up than expected.

Last spring, school ended in Whitehall with an enrollment of 568 students in grades K-12. A number of students here last year have moved away, but instead of dropping, total enrollment has unexpectedly climbed to 582. Not counting the 17 new kindergarten students and new high school students from the Cardwell School, some 65 new students are enrolled in Whitehall schools who were not here in the spring. However, enrollment is still down from 592 at this time last year to 582 now, but school officials predicted 538 students would be enrolled here in the fall.

JEFFERSON VALLEY PRESENTS PERFORMER OF THE WEEK: Charles H. Scott. Charles H. Scott is a former stagehand in New York City and, according to JVP Board members, did an "absolutely delightful" Job portraying York in "Journey of Discovery." Charles has previous acting experience, including a three-person original play set during the Civil War.

WHITEHALL COACH OF THE WEEK: Joe LaVigne. Joe LaVigne will coach his first high school basketball team this fall. Joe played basketball at WHS in the late 1960s and in the 1970s. Joe has coached men's teams in church leagues and joins first-year coach Kerry Sacry in the Lady Trojans basketball program.

WHITEHALL ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Kylie Bullock. Kylie Bullock, 12, is a Boulder resident and recipient of the Kathy Contway Award at the Jefferson County Fair Kids Horse Show and Rodeo. Kylie took first in three of the competition's six-week events and third in another. Contway, a Whitehall resident and avid rodeo competitor, was injured in a pedestrian-car accident this spring.
